His biographical file in the British Library states:
Enlisted / attested at Nuneaton 23 May 1953 for 12 years in the East
India Company artillery. He was 24yrs 10 months, 5 ft, dark hair, hazel
eyes, dark complexion and his previous occupation was servant and
native of Sligo.
Joined recruiting party depot at Warley, Essex 29 Jue 1853 and
embarked for Bengal on the Lord Dalhousie on 2 august 1853.
Posted as Gunner to 1st Company 3rd Battalion Bengal Artillery.
in 1861 when European forces of hte EIC were given the option of
unpensioned discharge or transter to the British Army he was transferred
to No 1 Battery of the Royal Artillery and pension on 24 September 1872
